When should I start charging for my app?

19 September 2026 · by Nordva, who make Nordva Launch

The short answer

Earlier than feels comfortable: as soon as the product solves a real problem for someone, even if it's small and rough. A price turns polite interest into a real answer, and the first payments tell you who values it. Charge a modest amount, keep a free way to try it, and watch which people and channels bring the ones who pay.

Why earlier is better

Free users tell you what people will use. Paying customers tell you what people value. They are different lists, and building for the first list is how products end up with many users and no revenue.

A price also changes the feedback you get. People who pay tell you what’s missing for their work; people who don’t pay tell you what would make free better.

Signs you can charge now

  • Someone uses the product for a real task more than once.
  • Someone has told you what it saves them: time, money or a headache.
  • You’d be embarrassed to charge, but not ashamed: it works, it’s just plain.

“It isn’t finished” is not a reason to wait. Products are never finished. The first people to pay usually know that; they’re paying for the problem to go away and for your attention, not for polish.

How to price the first version

  1. Pick one price that’s easy to say yes to, without making the product look like a toy.
  2. Offer yearly billing at a discount; early customers who pay yearly are a strong signal.
  3. Tell early customers they keep the early price. It rewards them for the risk and makes the ask easier.
  4. Keep a free way to try it: a trial or a limited free plan, so people can see it working before they pay.

You can change the price later. You can’t learn anything from customers you never asked.

What to watch after

  • Who pays, by source. Some channels bring people who pay; others bring people who browse. Put your time into the first.
  • What paying customers ask for. It’s the most reliable guide to what to build next.
  • Who cancels, and why. Ask one question when they leave, and read the answers every week.

With Nordva Launch

Connect Stripe read-only (every plan, Free included) and the Insights page shows which sources your paying customers came from, MRR and churn; each person’s feedback sits on their record next to whether they pay.

When Launch is the wrong tool

If your product only works once many people use it (a marketplace, a network), you may need a free period to reach that point; measure who stays while you do.
