Canny alternatives for solo developers and small SaaS
18 September 2026 · by Nordva, who make Nordva Launch
What should a solo developer or small SaaS use instead of Canny for user feedback?
If you want a public voting board and roadmap, Frill and Featurebase are the closest to Canny at a lower starting price. If you would rather keep feedback private, have it classified automatically and sent to the tools you already use, and get a waitlist and changelog on the same key, Nordva Launch fits. If support integrations are the point, stay with Canny.

Canny is a good product. People look for alternatives for three reasons, and which one is yours decides the answer.
The three reasons people leave Canny
Price at the first paid step. Canny’s free plan stops at 25 tracked users, and the API is not on it. The first paid plan is billed yearly. For a product with a few hundred users and no revenue yet, that is the largest line on the tools bill.
It is a board, and you may not want a board. Canny’s model is public: users post ideas, others vote, you maintain a roadmap. That is valuable with thousands of users. With two hundred, a board mostly shows how few votes there are, and it commits you to answering in public.
It is one more thing to wire up. Feedback is rarely the only thing a small product needs. A waitlist before launch, a changelog after, and a way to tell users something shipped each usually mean another vendor, another key and another bill.
The alternatives, by what you actually want
You want a voting board, for less
Frill is the closest in spirit: idea boards with voting, a public roadmap, announcements and in-app surveys. It has no free plan, only a trial, and its entry plan limits you to 50 active ideas. It can import from Canny. It also offers single sign-on for your end users.
Featurebase bundles boards, roadmap and changelog with a support inbox and a help center, priced per seat. For one person that is inexpensive. It gets costly as people join, and AI resolutions are charged per use on top.
You want announcements first, feedback second
Beamer and AnnounceKit are changelog and in-app announcement tools that added feedback boards. Beamer sells feedback as an add-on to a plan priced by monthly active users. AnnounceKit includes feature requests in its plans and has no per-seat fees, but starts higher. Both suit a product marketer working from a dashboard more than a developer working from code.
You want feedback handled, without running a board
This is where Nordva Launch sits, and it is a different trade. There is no public board, no voting and no roadmap page. Instead:
- A widget or one API call collects free-text feedback, with the page it came from and your own user id.
- Each item is classified (bug, feature request, praise, billing, support). On Indie and up a model also summarises it, after best-effort removal of emails, phone and card numbers; on Free a keyword matcher picks the category and no model sees the text.
- It is routed to where you already work: email on every plan, Slack, Linear or GitHub issues from Indie.
- People can leave an email, so you can reply to them.
- With the MCP server connected, your coding agent can read the inbox, group it by what people are asking for, and check your codebase for each group.
The same key also runs a waitlist with referral tracking, a changelog with email subscribers and RSS, in-app notifications, and, if you connect Stripe read-only, which signup sources produced paying customers.
What you give up is real: your users cannot see or vote on each other’s ideas, and there is no public signal of what you are building next.
How to choose
| Your situation | Pick |
|---|---|
| Thousands of users, and public voting is part of how you talk to them | Canny, or Frill for less |
| Support inbox, help center and feedback in one place, one or two people | Featurebase |
| A marketer owns announcements and wants popups, banners and NPS | Beamer or AnnounceKit |
| You are one developer, pre-launch or early, and want feedback triaged into Slack or Linear, plus a waitlist and changelog, from code or an AI agent | Nordva Launch |
| Integrations with Intercom, Zendesk, HubSpot or Salesforce matter | Stay with Canny |
Moving off Canny
Whatever you choose, export your posts and votes first, and check what the export contains before you cancel. A board-based tool can often take them directly: Frill advertises an importer for Canny. Launch has no place for votes, so a move there means keeping the export as an archive and starting a fresh, private inbox. If your board has hundreds of voted ideas that you refer to weekly, that loss is a reason to stay with a board.
Questions
- Is there a free Canny alternative?
- Canny itself has a free plan, limited to 25 tracked users and without API access. Featurebase has a free plan with one seat. Beamer has a free plan for its changelog, with feedback boards sold as a paid add-on. Frill and AnnounceKit offer trials only. Nordva Launch has a free plan with 50 feedback messages a month per project, sorted by keywords; sorting by AI and routing to Slack, Linear or GitHub start on the Indie plan.
- Which Canny alternatives have an MCP server?
- As of the date above: Canny, Featurebase and AnnounceKit list one, Frill lists one although parts of its site still called it upcoming when we checked, Beamer does not mention one, and Nordva Launch has one on every plan including Free.
- Do I need a public voting board at all?
- Not always. A voting board works when you have enough users that votes mean something and you are prepared to answer in public. With a few hundred users, most teams get more from reading every piece of feedback, grouped by what people are asking for, and replying to the person directly.
