What does youtube.com mean as a referrer in my analytics?

23 September 2026 · by Nordva, who make Nordva Launch

The short answer

It means someone clicked a link to your site on YouTube: in a video description, a comment, a channel's profile links or an end screen. The referrer names YouTube but, in most browsers, not the video or the channel, because browsers send only the site name when a click leaves for another site. To know which video it was, tag the links you post.

Where on YouTube the click happened

YouTube lets creators put clickable links in several places, according to its own help page: long video descriptions and comments, the links on a channel’s profile, end screens, and live chat on horizontal streams. Links in Shorts descriptions and Shorts comments are not clickable, so a Shorts viewer who wants your site has to type or paste it, and that visit arrives with no referrer (direct).

The same click shows up under a few names:

  • youtube.com or www.youtube.com: YouTube in a desktop browser.
  • m.youtube.com: YouTube’s mobile site in a phone browser.
  • com.google.android.youtube: the YouTube app on Android. Android lets the app that opened a link name itself, and a browser can pass that on as android-app:// plus the app’s package name.
  • youtu.be: sometimes listed on its own; treat it as YouTube.

What it hides

When a click goes from one site to another, browsers by default send only the origin (the site name), not the page address. MDN documents this as the default referrer policy, strict-origin-when-cross-origin. So you see youtube.com, not the video. Your own video, a video by someone who reviewed your product and a comment you left under a third video all look the same.

How to see which video it was

Tag every link you post on YouTube. The tags are part of the address, so they arrive whatever the referrer says:

https://example.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=setup-tutorial

Use a different utm_campaign for each video, and a separate one for your channel’s profile links. If someone else is making a video about your product, give them a tagged link of their own so their viewers get counted separately from yours.

With Nordva Launch

Launch counts youtube.com, m.youtube.com, youtu.be and the YouTube Android app as social, next to search, email, AI assistants, paid, referral and direct. A link tagged utm_source=youtube also counts as social, and a paid medium such as utm_medium=cpc counts as paid. Grouping paying customers by utm_campaign, so each video gets its own line, needs the Builder plan.

When Launch is the wrong tool

If you only want to know how many people clicked from YouTube, the referrer already tells you. Launch is for when you want to know which video brought the people who signed up and paid.
